Abstract

Chickpea is a prime rabi crop of Karnataka state, occupying about an area of 4.79 lakh ha with a production of 2.81 lakh tones and productivity of 618 kg per ha. Gulbarga district alone contributes to 50% of total area. The productivity of chickpea is low because of non adoption of available technologies by the farmers. The front line demonstration is the concept evolved by Indian Council of Agricultural Research with the inception of the Technology Mission on Agriculture crops. The frontline demonstration (FLD) was conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gulbarga, Karnataka state on Chickpea with Improved package of practices at farmer fields for consecutive years. The results reveal variation in the per cent increase in the yield was found due to variation in agro-climatic parameters under rainfed condition. In same sequence the other parameters like technology gap, extension gap and technology index were also analyzed for assessment of technology adoption rate with extension activities and feasibility of demonstrated technologies at ground reality levels. Moreover the results clearly indicate the positive effects of FLDs over the existing practices towards enhancing the productivity of Chick pea in the rainfed region of Kalaburgi District. Demonstrated technologies proved most remunerative and economically feasible against traditional production system. The year wise data reveals that demo yield 12.5 q/ha and check plot yield 10.1q/ha in 2010-11 during implementation period and it is 13.35 q/ha and 10.2 q/ha respectively in 2013-14 and 13.88 q/ha in 2014. The higher average grain yield in demonstration plots over the years compare to local check due to knowledge and adoption of full package of practices.
