ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM CARICA PAPAYA LINN. (ENDOCARP) EXTRACTSRUBINA LAWRENCE, EBENEZER JEYAKUMAR AND AKSHI GUPTAAbstract The present study was undertaken to identify bioactive compounds from Carica papaya Linn. extracts exhibiting antibacterial properties against selected organisms. Ethyl acetate extract with maximum antagonistic activity was subjected to thin layer and column chromatography for isolation of bioactive compounds. Fourteen fractions with similar Rf values were pooled and evaluated again for antibacterial activity using spot assay technique. Taking Staphylococcus aureus as indicator organism Minimum inhibitory concentration values of the extract was determined. The final MIC and MBC values were found to be two fold higher than the initial MIC. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of terpenoids.
