Abstract

Hydrophila schulli is an important medicinal plant and used in India as a traditional medicine for a wide range of various ailments. The aim of the present study is to determine the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant property of Hydrophila schulli seed extract. The shade dried seed was powdered and extracted with Soxhlet apparatus. The antioxidant activity was determined by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity and the total antioxidant capacity of the methanolic seed extract of Hydrophila schulli was also analysed. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the methanolic seed extract of Hydrophila schulli revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, carbohydrates and reducing sugar. The methanolic seed extract had high level of antioxidants and free radical scavenging activity. In conclusion, methanolic seed extract of Hydrophila schulli have different types of phytochemical as well as high level of antioxidant activity, these may be reason for their pharmaceutical property. Further study is needed for the isolation of compounds from the seed extract.
