EFFECT OF GA3 AND 6-BENZYL ADENINE IN PRODUCTION OF SCIONS FOR GRAFTING IN PAPAYA CV. 9-1(D)S. Senthilkumar, N. Kumar, K. Soorianathasundaram and P. Jeyakumar
The vegetative propagation of papaya on commercial scale is having an inherent limitation due to little bud sprouting character. So, an attempt was made at TNAU, Coimbatore during 2010 with the PGRs viz., GA3 (Gibberellic acid) and BA (6-Benzyladenine), on six months old field grown papaya trees of cv. 9-1(D). Among the treatments, it was revealed that the mother plants sprayed with BA 250 ppm produced a higher number of 25.00 buds per plant at 20 days after spraying. In respect of number of graftable sized scionic lateral production, plants sprayed with GA3 125 ppm + BA 125 ppm registered the maximum number viz., 10.83 laterals at 20 days and another 7.50 laterals at 35 days after spraying. The suitable girth of scion for grafting was obtained from GA3 125 ppm + BA 125 ppm both at 20 days (2.17 cm) and 35 days (2.50 cm) after spraying.
