QUO VADIS? OSSUDU LAKE, PUDUCHERRY? ENTERTAINMENT AT THE STAKE OF ENVIRONMENT! A TOURISM PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Tourism and environment are tangled intangible equations. They are inseparable and go hand-in-hand. A natural environment architected with a serene lake, benign flora, bountiful fauna and satiating bird sanctuary are more often treated as tourism products. These products make it a manifestation of entertainment to tourists. Consumerism of these tourism products has direct impact on the environment. In an aim to assess the tourism’s influence on a natural environment, Ossudu lake, a growing Tourism spot in Puducherry is taken for a complete study. In this study, key thrust is accentuated in ascertaining the external dynamics that frequently disturb the lake’s ecology. This study is meticulously carried out with strenuous field visit at regular intervals, observation techniques and qualitative interaction with Tourists and the host community. The corollaries drawn divulges that the lake ecology is disturbed due to repeated visits by the tourists, tourism activities at regular intervals, ill-handling of the surrounding and unethical activities by the nearby dwellers. These alarming factors emanate a holistic approach of investigation into the Ecology of the lake. This research stands unique, as Tourists-environment profile is customised to comprehend the psychosomatic factor that motivates the tourists to visit Ossudu lake. Finally, guidelines are drawn distinctly for the Government, tourists and the host community that would facilitate the Conservationism of the Ossudu lake.
