Abstract

The study deals with the preparation of cellulose powder (CP) from soybean hulls by mild alkali treatment (4%) followed by anaerobic digestion. The anaerobic method was compared with chemical method in which 16 % alkali used for CP preparation from soybean hulls. An anaerobic consortium developed by Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT) was used for this purpose. The results revealed that anaerobic method yielded CP of 97.5% purity in comparison to 98.4% purity in chemical method. The cellulase activity (μg of reducing sugar/ mL/ h) of CP from soybean hulls by anaerobic method was (5618) which was higher than chemical method (612). The peaks obtained in X-ray diffractometry and FT-IR spectrum showed similarity between commercial CP and CP from soybean hulls by anaerobic treatment which reveal the purity of CP from soybean hulls. The results obtained in this study show the potential of an eco-friendly anaerobic method to produce CP from soybean hulls having better purity and high cellulase activity.
