GM CROPS IS A SOLUTION FOR WORLD FOOD CRISIS?

ROHINI BANSODE AND PRASAD ANDHARE

Abstract

Food security had been a major and fast-growing concern worldwide. Following the 2008 food price crisis, which caused social and political unrest in several developing nations; there was a renewed sense of urgency and commitment among political and scientific communities towards increasing food production and meeting the challenges of an ever-increasing world population set to reach the 9.3 billion mark by 2050. In the current scenario, maximizing crop productivity on existing farmlands had been the only logical way to address food security concerns, as the amount of arable land is unlikely to increase in the future. Genetically modified (GM) crops offer massive benefits to the third world, if the ethical obligations were considered in developing the GM crops to combat the world food crisis.
