INFLUENCES OF PSEUDOMONAS FLUORESCENS ON BIOPRIMING OF RICE HYBRID CORH 4 AND ITS PAREANTAL LINE

M. KOKILA AND M. BHASKARAN

Abstract

Pseudomonas fluorescens (PF1) is a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and a proven biological control agent which could produce promising effect if inoculated through a priming technology. In this experiment, the optimum concentration of Pseudomonas fluorescens and biopriming duration required for CORH 4 rice hybrid and its parental lines (COMS 23A, CB174R) were standardized. The treatments consisted of four different concentration of P. fluorescens (1, 2, 4 and 6%) and four priming durations (6, 12, 18, and 24 hours) along with nonprimed and hydroprimed seeds as control. Among the different concentrations of Pseudomonas fluorescens and priming durations tested, 4% Pseudomonas fluorescens for 12h was found to be the best seed biopriming treatment which substantially improved the speed of germination, germination percentage, seedling length, dry matter production, vigour index over control, irrespective of paddy cultivars. SEM analysis of bioprimed seeds obviously revealed the transportation of bacterial cell inside the seed and its simultaneous multiplication along with growth of seedling.
