PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF PILOT SCALE REACTOR FOR THE TREATMENT OF TEXTILE DYEING WASTEWATERS USING OZONE BASED AOPS

U. SATHYA AND S. KANMANI

Abstract

This study is aimed to evaluate the performance of Pilot-scale Reactor for the treatment of textile dyeing wastewater using ozone based AOPs. In the pilot-scale experiment, operational parameters including ozone dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage and reaction time were optimised in a 100-L mild steel reactor. The different dosages of ozone were tried and the optimised ozone dosage was 10g/h. The optimised hydrogen peroxide dosage was 200 mg/L and the contact time was 60 min. The treatment was carried out with actual pH. The maximum of 65% colour removal, 76% COD removal and 63% TOC were achieved for biologically treated wastewater (BWW) and the maximum of 79% colour removal, 43% COD removal and 29% TOC were achieved for raw wastewater (RWW) when subjected to O3/UV/H2O2. The biodegradability ratio increased from 0.29 to 0.45 after the ozonation treatment in raw wastewater whereas in biologically treated wastewater it increased up to 0.62. It can be concluded that the results were very much favourable for decolourization and also for degradation of the real textile dyeing wastewaters by treating with ozone and O3/UV/H2O2.
