Abstract

Estuary is more vulnerable for its production and its threat. The species stability will alter from season to season and it faces challenges for its survival. Demands of people living around Pulicat lake need to take effort in conservation strategy of fauna and flora. Estuaries are affected by the riverine and marine influences such as tides, waves, and the influx of saline water; and flows of fresh water and sediment, in addition to morphology of lagoon. The present study identified 39 species of fishes belong to class elasmobranchii and teleostomi out of which the common species reduced to 30. The phytoplankton, zooplankton, polycheates, crustaceans and molluscs are tabulated in the recent study. Threats are due to the over exploitation during the monsoon season, using unadvised gears, plastic molded fiber boats and pollutants. Significant reduction in the migratory birds also recorded during the period of study. The tourism and closure of lake mouth has been added features for the conservation threat to Pulicat.
