STUDY ON WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS OF A PRIVATE MULTISPECIALTY HOSPITAL AT CHENNAIC. NIRMALA RANI, RAJASHEKAR TALIKOTI AND S.R. KANNANAbstract Shortage of water resources, its conservation due to population growth are the important issues for Environmental Engineers. Besides, hospital wastewater has the same quality as municipal wastewater, they may also potentially contain various hazardous components like infectious pathogens, toxic, biodegradable and radioactive contaminants that can cause pollution and health problems. In this paper, physical and chemical characteristics of produced wastewater in a private hospital located at the outskirts of Chennai were investigated. Results were compared with the effluent parameters of wastewater standards. The findings of the study showed that BOD, COD and TDS of the wastewater were 108.2, 176.65 and 53.55 mg/L respectively. Comparison of the indicators between effluents of wastewater treatment systems and the CPHEEO standards of Environment, showed a considerable increase in the hospital wastewater. Hence it was decided to go for the design of various treatment units.
