ASSESSMENT OF DRINKING WATER QUALITY IN VILLAGES OF SHAHAPUR, DIST- THANE, INDIAS.G. KAUR, S. LOKEGAOKAR AND B.M. NABARAbstract Eight Drinking water samples collected from groundwater sources of Kambare, Aaware and Cherpoli villages in Shahapur in District Thane and were analyzed for physico-Chemical and microbiological parameters. Results are compared with drinking water standards to determine the water quality. The physical parameters like color and turbidity were found to be within permissible limit. While chemical oxygen demand (COD), hardness, chlorides and alkalinity results were found to be beyond the standard acceptable limit except for BOD levels. Viable count shows drastic variation as per the seasons. Bacterial isolates obtained by standard methods were identified as per Bergeys manual as E. coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Serratia, Klebsiella, Edwasdsiella, Salmonella spp, Shigella sp, Proteus sp. and Pseudomonas spp. The bacterial isolates obtained were confirmed by PCR-based 16S rRNA method were Pseudomonas species and Acinetobacter sp.
