Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to study the fluoride contamination in ground water and its effect on dental fluorosis in children and defluoridation using Vetiveria zizanioides. Fourty ground water samples were analyzed for fluoride along with their Physico chemical parameters. Most of the wells had fluoride content more than 1.5 mgL and most of the water quality parameters were above the standard prescribed by BIS. From the fluorosis detection camp in the schools indicated that 36 per cent students were affected with dental fluorosis. Laboratory experiment with Vetiveria zizanioides as defluoridation agent elucidated that the plant has fluoride removal efficiency and act as a defluoridation agent.
