CONTAMINATION OF SHALLOW GROUNDWATER OF BHUBANESWAR CITY DUE TO URBANIZATIONSUDHIR K. SRIVASTAVA, J.S. BHARGAV AND Y.S. KUMARAbstract Fast pace of urbanization of Bhubaneswar city may cause formidable problems of insanitation in the area on account of over flow of untreated sewage from oxidation ponds into valleys and nallahs . The shallow ground water of the city , which has not been found contaminated so far is vulnerable to contamination in lateritic and fractured sand stone formations . The total nitrate leached to the well at Bargarh, Khadigramudyog,Sriram saw mill, Delta colony, Laxmi Narayan Temple, Ashok Nagar, Mancheswar and RBI colony are found to be high and hence these localities are considered prone to ground water contamination in absence of adequate waste disposal management practices . The presence of high iron in few areas is due to lateritic formations.
