APPLICATION OF WATER QUALITY INDEX FOR GROUNDWATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF BASTI CITY, UTTER PRADESH, INDIA

Abstract

The ground water of Basti city has been assessed for suitability to public consumption, using WQI. Water Quality Index (WQI) indicates the water quality in terms of index number, and offers a useful representation of overall quality of water. The parameters studied ware pH, Total dissolved solid, Alkalinity, Hardness, Chloride, Fluoride, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Dissolved Oxygen, and coliform. Water quality index (WQI) of the ground water of study area ranged excellent to unsuitable for drinking purpose. Out of 30 sampling sites only 13 were found suitable for drinking, indicating that the groundwater is unsafe and account for health hazards.
