Abstract

The pre-sowing seed treatments were given and field observations recorded on germination and different seedling growth attributing characters of hirda (Terminalia chebula Retz.). The study showed that all the pre-sowing seed treatments given significantly influenced the germination and seedling growth attributes of hirda except root-shoot ratio. The seeds soaked in conc. H2SO4 for 4 minutes followed by washing and soaking in cold water for 24 hours (T10) showed early seedling emergence (35.00), maximum germination percentage (40.00), highest plant height (32.30), maximum number of leaves per seedling (24.60) and also higher values in shoot diameter (4.01), shoot dry weight (1.81), Root length (22.57cm), Root diameter (3.39mm), Root dry weight (1.51g), seedling vigour index (2191.15) as compared to other pre-sowing treatments and is followed by pre sowing treatment T9 (soaking in Con. H2SO4 for 2 min. followed by washing and soaking in cold water for 12 hr.). The treatment T10 recorded the lowest root: shoot ratio than any other treatments which was beneficial as far as seedling growth attributes are concerned.
