INVESTIGATION OF TRACE ELEMENT POLLUTION IN RELATION TO ROAD DUST OF HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS IN GUWAHATI CITY, INDIAYAMIN HASSAN AND H.P. SARMAAbstract Trace heavy metal contamination in the soils is a major concern because of their toxicity and threat to human life and the environment. The contamination of urban soils contributes directly or indirectly to the normal quality of life to the residents of urban localities. Urbanization has taken place at an unprecedented pace for the last few years in Guwahati. This paper provides an overview of studies on the quality of urban road side soil in Guwahati with high traffic area activities with special reference to potentially toxic trace metals in addition of general physiocochemical parameters. It summarizes the characteristics of spatial and temporal distribution and major sources of various potentially toxic chemicals and trace metal for premonsoon and postmonsoon season.
