Abstract

Distillery spentwash contains nutrients and organic matter and hence beneficially used on agricultural lands. A laboratory incubation experiment was carried out to study the different amount of distillery spentwash on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. The treatments consisted of T 1 -Soil alone, T 2 ,T 3 , T 4 , T 5 and T 6 -Spentwash @ 20 kilo litres ha -1 , 40 kilo litres ha -1 , 60 kilo litres ha -1 , 80 kilo litres ha -1 and 100 kilo litresha -1 respectively. Among the different levels, the highest organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, mineral nitrogen and microbial population was observed in 100 kilo litres ha -1 of spentwash compared to soil alone. Results showed that application of spentwash not only added mineral N and carbon to soil, but also promoted the mineralization of soil organic C and N.
