GC-MS ANALYSIS OF ANTIFUNGAL COMPOUND PRODUCED BY STREPTOMYCES FROM MARINE SOIL SEDIMENTS

S. USHA NANDHINI AND M. MASILAMANI SELVAM

Abstract

The streptomycetes were isolated from the marine sediments of Tamil Nadu coastal areas. The isolated strains were purified by ISP2 medium and then processed for primary screening against human and plant pathogenic fungus. The Bioactive compounds were extracted from the active strain by solvent extraction methods and crude compounds were purified by using column chromatography and Thin layer chromatography. The purified compounds were tested against same fungus by agar well diffusion method for secondary screening and then compounds identified by GC-MS techniques. Then the active strain was characterized and identified as Streptomyces cacaoi strain SU2 (JF730119) by 16S rDNA partial gene sequencing. Findings from this investigation revealed that the selected active strain from the marine sediments were best suitable for production of antifungal compounds.
