A STUDY ON THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND HEAVY METAL CONCENTRATIONS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE OF MYSORE CITY, INDIA

D.C. SHYAMALA AND S.L. BELAGALI

Abstract

The huge amount of solid waste generation and its disposal has become a major case of concern at present. In Mysore city, about 259.4 tons of solid waste is generated daily. The solid waste collected from the various parts of the city has different compositions upon the nature and type of solid waste. The present study on 24 physico-chemical parameters of degraded solid waste at different stages of composting samples and heavy metals concentration like, copper, cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic are analysed. It was found that, on an average, the physico-chemical parameters vary at different stages of compost. The heavy metals concentration available in the samples were least with arsenic and highest with copper and all the five heavy metals concentrations are within the permissible limits of Ohai EPA Standards.
