EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS ON SO2 REMOVAL PROCESS USING WET SCRUBBER

C. MAHESWARI AND K. KRISHNAMURTHY2

Abstract

One of the most air- polluting gases which reduce the quality of air is sulphur dioxide (SO2). In this paper, experimental investigation on SO2 removal efficiency using pilot plant wet scrubber system is studied. Hydrogen peroxide is used as the reactant which converts SO2 into sulphuric acid as a by-product. This sulphuric acid can be used as an industrial product. The results produced by the experimental system reveals that the pH value of the developed by-product has the direct influence on the flow rate of hydrogen peroxide. PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is used to control the flow rate of hydrogen peroxide entered into the wet scrubber. The required pH value of by-product is obtained by implementing a suitable controller which regulates the flow rate of hydrogen peroxide entered into the wet scrubber. For this, open loop response of the system is identified and simulation is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. The controller tuning is achieved by ZN (Ziglar and Nichols) PID, and IMC (Internal Model Controller) LID controller. The simulation result provides better control action when using IMC LID controller.
