BIOREMEDIATION: AN ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP THROUGH ENGINEERED BACTERIA (OVERVIEW)B. PATTANAYAK AND N.K. DHALAbstract Utilization of microorganism to clean up contaminated soil, sludges, residues and air known as Bioremediation, is a rapidly changing process that offers a potentially effective and economical clean up technique than traditional physicochemical methods. Microorganisms that use metals as terminal electron acceptors or reduce metals as a detoxification mechanism can be used for the removal of metals from contaminated environments. Here, brief outline of the developing Bioremediation technique through genetic engineering is presented. The major features and limitations are discussed.
