PHASE I PHENOMENON: ANALYSIS OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE FOR METTUPALAYAM TOWNH. SUMATHY, AMIYA KUMAR SAHU AND R. N. UMAAbstract The municipality of Mettupalayam covering 7.2 square Km, and with vast regular and floating population, is a prime candidate for waste generation and management. Targeted under public private partnership, waste management is undertaken by the collective effort of the municipality with the private body IWMUST. In the current study various sites were selected in Mettupalayam municipality for solid waste sampling. The waste samples were collected from five different locations during its different stages of waste management, i.e. primary collection, secondary collection, temporary storage at disposal site, treatment and final disposal. The municipal solid waste samples tested for the physico-chemical characteristics, showed high level of impact on physical and chemical environment. Climatic conditions were found to drastically affect physico chemical characteristics as well as volume of Total Solids, Ash Content, Volatile Content and Organic Residue. Harmful biomedical waste and improper safety measures proposed serious health hazard to sanitary workers. This paper deals with pre-monsoon details as Phase I and all other seasons will be considered in the further studies.
