COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FATTY ACID PROFILES IN CULTIVABLE FRESHWATER FISHES

R. Saravanan, R. Sivachandran and K. Revathi

Abstract

Meat quality of Indian major carps and catfishes varies by age , rearing systems and feed consumed. The paper presents the fatty acid profiles in edible muscle of freshwater cultivable Indian major carps Catla catla (catla), Labeo rohita (rohu) , and catfish Clarias batrachus. A quantitative difference between fatty acids in muscle tissue was investigated between the various fish species and to review the factors influencing fatty acids content and composition . This study would also help to identify long term sustainable ways for increasing the beneficial fatty acids in carp and catfish flesh during fish culture as they represent the most important dietary source of polyunsaturated fatty acids in human nutrition reflecting their roles in critical physiological processes.
