EFFECT OF DREDGING ALLUVIAL ISLANDS ON FLOOD HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTIC OF KARUN RIVER BY 2D MODELING

Mahmoud Karimi and Habib Mousavi

Abstract

Nowadays there is much attention on flood control by using non structural methods in rivers, and this work needs knowledge about factors that create and intensify them. Karun River, one of the longest rivers in Iran, and its Catchment lands are in provinces Khuzestan, Lorestan and Chaharmahar. It is hoped that by using method of managing the flood and utilization of it, will help improvement economically and for tourism. Nowadays using 1D and 2D models for modeling flow of rivers are common. In this research by using 2D model of MIKE 21, effect of alluvial islands on flood hydraulic is investigated. After calibration of the model, it shows that Dredging alluvial islands can increase flood discharge capacity to 40%. Also Shear stress for areas that their islands removed is significantly reduced. This amount is 40% approximately. Especially in areas that shear stress is supercritical, dredging can reduce erosion significantly.
