ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM D-XYLOSE BY CANDIDA INTERMEDIA MTCC -1404 : PARAMETER OPTIMIZATION USING TAGUCHI'S OVERALL EVALUATION CRITERIA TECHNIQUECH.PAVANA JYOTHI, R.SREENIVAS RAO, S.RATESHAM AND L.VENKATESWAR RAOAbstract Ethanol production from D - Xylose by Candida intermedia MTCC- 1404 was optimized using a novel Taguchi's Overall Evaluation Criteria experimental design approach. Experimental design L8, available in the form of orthogonal array and software QUALITEK- 4 for automatic design and Overall Evaluation Criteria analysis of the experiments, based on Taguchi's approach was used. Optimal levels of physical parameters and key media components namely, agitation, inoculum size, xylose, yeast extract, CSL, peptone and KFI2PO4 were determined. Among all parameters, KH2PO4 , yeast extract, agitation, and moculum size contributed higher influence. Media components like xylose, CSL and peptone concentration played an important role in the conversion of xylose to ethanol. The yield of ethanol under these optimal conditions was 90.581%.
