PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL STUDIES ON CRUDE EXTRACTS OF SOLANLIM STRAMOENIFOLIUMJACQ., S. SEAFORTHIANLIM ANDR., AND S.VIOLACELIM ORTG.B.K. MANJUNATHA, S.M. VIDYA, G. NARAYANAMURTHY AND V. KRISHNAAbstract Phytothemical and antibacterial activity of methanolic leaf extract of three species of the genus Solanum viz., S. stramoenifoliunt Jacq. S. seaforthianum Andr. and S.violacezun Ortg., was investigated. The extracts showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, sterols and tannins at different concentrations. Antibacterial activity was tested against both 0-ram +ve and gram -ve organisms. The extract exhibited concentration dependent activity. Maximum activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter nerogenes by S. violaceum, S. stramoenifolium and S. sea forthianum respectively.
