ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI OF A PALM, BORASSUS FLABELLIFER L. A FIRST REPORT FROM INDIA

Abstract

An ecological survey of foliar fungal endophyte of the palm species Borassus flabellifer L. was undertaken in Tamil Nadu, India. The study showed thirty fungal endophytes. Among these Phoma sp. I, Pestialotiopsis sp. and Alternaria alternata was the dominant endophytes. More number of endophytes could be isolated during the wet season. Hyphomycetes were more prevalent followed by ascomycetes, stertile forms and coelomycetes. This is the first report on fungal endophyte in leaves of Borassus flabellifer L. in India.
