MITO-INHIBITORY AND CYTOTOXIC EFFECTS OF AMBANALA WATER IN ALLIUM TEST SYSTEMD.D. KHEDKAR AND A.J. DIXITAbstract The local cultivators for irrigation of variety of crop plants utilize Ambanala water. The cytological effects of the nalawater on Allium test system was studied selecting five different sites on the nala. It was found that nalawater is mito-inhibitory and reduces the mitotic index. It decreased the relative division rate and increased the relative abnormality rate. The water also induced various types of chromosomal abnormalities such as disturbed meta- and anaphases, stickiness, bridges, laggards, fragments, multipolarity etc. It appears that nalawater contain some cytotoxic, genotoxic or mutagenic substances that are responsible for mito-inhibitory and chromotoxic action.
