ENZYMATIC SYNTHESIS OF OLIGOSACCHARIDES BY ACTINOMYCES SP.A. ATEEF AND J.K. OLOKEAbstract An isolate of Actinomyces sp was screened for the production of P-galactosidase and lactose hydrolysis. The maximal hydrolytic activity of the 13-galactosidase was obtained at temperature of 55°C and pH 7.0. The km and Vmax of the enzyme were found to be 1.75 m/v1-' and 1.33 Um1-1 respectively. Apart from monosatcharides such as glucose and galactose that were produced, evidence exists for the synthesis of varieties of oligosaccharides under different reaction conditions. The implications of the reaction conditions and the industrial usefulness of the enzyme in the future were discussed.
