GENOTOXIC EVALUATION OF A SYSTEMIC FUNGICIDE FERBAM IN ALLIUM CEPA ROOT MERISTEMATIC CELLSR. SHANTHI AND M. KRISHNAMOORTHYAbstract The potential genotoxic effect of a dithiocarbamate fungicide ferbam was studied on the root tip cells of onion. Actively growing young root meristems of Allium cepa were treated with three different concentration of ferbam for 6, 12, 24, 48 hr. Slides were prepared using Haematoxylin staining technique and different aberrations like stickiness, hypocoiling, clumping, micronucleus, c-metaphase anaphase bridges, breaks were statistically significant in the treated series though the frequency of these aberrations reduced significantly in the recovery series. Ferbam was found to be clastogenic and mutagenic in the onion test system
