Abstract

Histopathological and biochemical alterations induced by V. parahaemolyticus, the causative agent of shell disease in the post-larval stages of Penaeus indicus inhabiting the backwater regions on the East coast of India wete investigated. Atrophy, multi-focal necrosis, vacuolisation, hypertrophy and melanisation of the hepatopancreas, nerve cord and muscles were evident. Changes in the antenna' glands and gills were relatively less defined. Biochemically, there was a greater depletion of total lipids than carbohydrates or proteins. Reduction in DNA and RNA content and ATPase activity were perceptible.
