INTEGRATED APPROACH FOR EVACUATION, CHARACTERISATION AND MANAGEMENT OF SOIL AND WATER RELATED CONSTRAINTS IN ARID ENVIRONMENT OF PUNJAB, INDIAV.K. VERMA, L.B. PATEL, P.K. SHARMA, G.S. TOOR AND CHARANJIT SINGHAbstract An integrated approach using remote sensing and conventional techniques was developed for evaluation and characterisation of site specific constraints related to soil and water in arid tract of Punjab, India. To evaluate the stresses due to soils, a soil map of the area was prepared using satellite data following standard procedures. Ground water samples were c011ected, analysed and a ground water quality map was generated to assess the stresses due to ground water. Further these maps were integrated to come out with a constraint map depicting physical, chemical and hydrological constraints. The study indicates that coarse textured soils and soil salinity pose physical and chemical constraints, whereas hydrological constraints comprise of salinity, alkalinity, sodicity and chloride toxicity in ground waters. The management practices have also been discussed to flag these stresses for better soil and water management.
