BIOCHEMICAL EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS SULFUR DIOXIDE IN SPINACH LEAF DISCSAKBAR MASOOD, SEEMA A, SI-IAJRUL AMIN and MOHD. FAROOQAbstract Spinach leaf discs were treated with aqueous SO2 between 10-1000 ppm concentrations to study the biochemical reactions leading to tissue injury. A concentration dependent effect on visible injury, chlorophyll destruction, Mg2+ leakage, lipid peroxidation, 1-114 CO3- fixation and ribulose-1, 5-biphosphate carboxylase was observed. A direct correlation between chlorophyll destruction and H14 CO3-fixation was seen. Similar parallelism could be drawn between Mg2+ leakage and the development of visible injury symptoms.
