GENOMIC DNA QUANTIFICATION WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO EVOLUTIONARY HIERARCHY: A PILOT ANALYSISJiji Thomas, P.A. Sajudeen and P.M. KoshyAbstract Genomic DNA is considered as the blueprint of life and much variation in amount of DNA among various plant species are documented. However, there exists a lacuna of knowledge with regard to quantification of DNA from various plant taxa and their evolutionary relationships. Aim of the present study is to estab-lish the significant relation between molecular evolution and evolutionary hierarchy of organisms by tak-ing DNA quantity per cell as the measure, and this comparative study will help us to better understanding of evolution. The present study assessed DNA content among lower (Chara, Funaria and Adianlum) and higher (Gnetum, Micheha, Clematis, Ocimum and Duranta) plant groups. The presence of a higher amount of DNA among members of gymnosperms and angiosperms was observed and the DNA load between gym-nosperms and angiosperms exhibited a major difference.
