ION CHROMATOGRAPHIC-POTENTIOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF NITRITE AND NITRATE IN NATURAL, PROCESSED AND IMPORTED MINERAL WATER IN BAHRAIN A COMPARATIVE STUDYAHMED Y. ALI-MOHAMED, EBRAHIM A.S. HASSAN AND NADIA S.A. SAEEDAbstract An investigation has been carried out to assess to natural availability of nitrite and nitrate in Bahrain, natural, processed and imported mineral waters. This included surface water (natural pool), groundwater (wells), blended water (tap), desalinated through ior-exchange (LE), and multistage flash desalination, were monitored for eleven months (Oct. 92-Aug. 1993). The nitrite ion concentration were found to be <0.01 mg dm-3 (which is below the minimum detection limit of the instrument) in all the water samples by ion-chromatography method. The nitrate ion concentration range from 14.0024.58 ± 0.04 mg dm4 in natural water, 14.06-16.46 ± 0.047 mg dm-3in the blended water, 5.21-10.74 ± 0.05 mg dm-' in processed water and 5.52-33.26 ± 0.04 mg dm-3in imported mineral water. As for the nitrate- nitrogen, the concentration ranges from 3.16-7.82 ± 9.5 x 10-3 mg dm-3 in natural water; 3.17-3.74 ± 8.5 x 1()-' ing dm-3 in blended water; 1.18-2.60 ± 0.01 mg dm-3 in the processed waters and 1.22-7.51 ± 0.01 mg dm-3in imported mineral waters using ion chromatographic method.
