R.S. LOKHANDE AND C.N. SATHE

Abstract

The M.I.D.C. area of Ambarnath is one of the highly polluted industrial belts. The waste water from the industries is added to the big nallah (drain) named as Waldhuni nallah which takes water finally to the creek; making creek water polluted. The heavy metals are the most harmful and insiduous pollutants because of their non-biodegradable nature. Hence, the study was conducted to determine the levels of heavy metals. The heavy metals monitored are Fe, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu and Pb; as they are toxic in nature. The sampling was carried out from the polluted parts of the industrial area. The tremendous variations in the parameters were observed. All the parameters were detected in all the samples collected throughout the study period. The concentrations observed are above the permissible limits that of prescribed by WHO and Indian standards.
