STUDIES ON PYRUVIC ACID LEVEL UNDER INFLUENCE OF ACIDITY OF WATER ON ZINC TOXICITY IN A FISH BARB US TICTO

S. R. MAGA RE AND H. T. PATH

Abstract

Present paper deals with the behavioural responses, rate of oxygen consumption, survival of fish and variation in pyruvic adid level of the fish, Barbus tiao exposed to different levels of zinc and pH. The impacts were studied with the long term toxicity tests. Exposure to zinc in terms of extent of survival, it was found to be more toxic at pH 3,5 and 11 as compared to pH 7 and 9. The stress due to zinc and pH were also manifested by several abnormal behavioural responses exhibited by Barbus ticto. Studies in exposure to zinc under influence of the acidity of water causes severe damage to the pyruvic acid level in liver and muscles of the freshwater fish, Barbus lido for 96 hours under the laboratory conditions. The pyruvie acid level was found to be declined throughout the exposure period except during the 24 hours exposure during which it was found to be increased. Zinc was found to affect the metabolic setup of pyruvie acid in a fish. KEY WORDS : Barbus ticto, zinc, pH, pyruvic acid.
