MICROBIAL PRE-TREATMENT FOR DESULFURISATION OF DISTILLERY EFFLUENT FOR IMPROVEMENT OF BIOMETHANATION

RAM CHANDRA

Abstract

Sulphate being a major content of distillery effluent, it inhibits the biomethanogenesis, and gets Converted into different species of sulfide during the acid formation, which is toxic to the growing microflora in the effluent treatment system. Consequently, inhibits the formation of methane precursor and establish the competition between sulfur reducing bacteria (SRB) and non-SRB for the same substrate. The isolated microbial strains of Pseudomonas sp., Xanthomonas sp., Bacillus 4/. and Pas turella sp. etc., was tolerant to high level of sulphate i.e., 70%. The optimum reduction of sulphate Was observed in 50% diluted spent wash sample containing 760 jig/m1 sulfate, which enhanced the biomelhanatIon upto 70%. This would be helpful for the improvement of distillery effluent treatment process with bio-gas recovery and system stability.
