C. RAVICHANDRAN, G. EDWIN CHANDRASEKARAN AND M. VIJAYA KUMAR

Abstract

Pudukkottai is an important town in Tamil Nadu and is a district headquarters for the Pudukkottai District. The ambient noise levels were measured at selected places representing "silence zone", "residential zone" and "commercial zone" to assess the extent of noise pollution in these places. Minimum, maximum, L.4, L1, IL.50 and L. noise levels were computed. None of the places recorded noise levels within the prescribed limits set by the Central Pollution Control Board. Vehicular traffic with air horns was found to be the main reason for these high noise levels. Strict enforcement of law to ban the use of air horns inside the town and any type of horns near the silence zone, proper maintenance of vehicles, laying or proper roads and their maintenance, planting of trees etc., can be undertaken to control this menace in Pudukkottai.
