IMPACT OF PAPER MILL POLLUTION ON THE NEIGHBOURING PEOPLE

Abstract

The present communication deals with pollution impact of Nagaon paper mill on the neighbouring areas. Study revealed that 13 villages with 5644 acres of cultivable land area along with a population nubering 7281 were under pollution impact of Nagaon paper mill. Out of these, 7 villages with 3079 acres of cultivable land and population numbering 4546 were severely affected by Nagaon Paper mill. Since commissioning of the mill the fish yield in nereby Elenga beel (Wetland) receiving the Nagaon paper mill effluent had been reduced considerably. The durability of fishing nets reduced, the beel area became shallow and the rice yield in adjacent agricultural field were also decreased due to irrigation with polluted water. Further diseases of skin and stomach in poultry, livestock and human population, associated with polluted beel water for fishing, grazing, farming etc. were very common leading to economic hardship to the people around the paper mill area. The study emphasized more effective treatment of released effluent of the mill to minimise toxicity for the alleviation of the hardship of the people of neighbouring areas of Nagaon paper mill.
