THE SURVEY OF ACID RAINS IN THE VENICE REGION (ITALY)

FRANCESCO ZILIO-GRANDI AND LIDIA SZPYRKOWICZ

Abstract

In recent years, air quality and in particular rainwater composition have become matter of increasing concern all over the world. A vast research program has been undertaken in the Veneto region. A network of 8 sampling stations ("background" stations), remote from motor traffic and industrial sources of air pollutants, and 1 "zero" station, was realised in 1988 in accordance with the EMEP statements. It gives meteorological and physical data on air quality and produces the wet-only samples of meteorological precipitation, the chemical composition of which is measured in the laboratory. The paper sums-up and compares data obtained from the analysis of atmospheric precipitations collected in 10 stations: 8 of a network participating to a European Monitoring Environmental Program, one installed to follow the impact of a Termoelectrical Power Plant and one station installed to define the characteristics of marine aerosol, near to the Adriatic sea.
