S.M. DESHPANDE, RD. KkPLAY AND S.G. KULKARIN

Abstract

Excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers over the past few decades has resulted in increased levels of nitrates in groundwater. Taking into consideration this aspect 15 groundwater samples from fifteen different villages in Paithan taluka of Aurangabad district are analysed to determine the nitrate content. A comparison of nitrate content with drinking water standards given by WHO and BIS ! 1S1 revealed that ninety three per cent of collected samples show nitrate values well above permissible limit which may be due to excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers in this region.
