EFFECT OF CONTAMINATED SOILS ON RELATIVE GROWTH RATE, CHLOROPHYLL AND NITROGEN CONTENT OF AZOLLA PLYNATA R. BR.HARDIP KAURAbstract Azolla pinnate R. Br was grown for 30 days in earthem pots containing 2 kg of eutrophicated soils vi,. Alcohol distillery soil - type AD; Sewage disposal soil-type SD and Soap factory soil-type SF along with Control-Garden soil after flooding the pots with tap water. Azolla thalli become reddish-green in type AD and SD soils whereas yellowish-red in SF soil in course of time while that of control remained green. There is a marked increase in relative growth rate, chlorophyll and nitrogen contents when grown in AD and SD soils whereas type SF soil inhibited its growth. The increment is positively correlated to the amount of phosphorus, potassium and organic carbon and pH of the soil. Results suggested that type AD and SD soils could serve as an effective growth promoting resources for Azolla cultivation.
