SEPARATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF METAL IONS BY AAS AND IMPREGNATED TLC IN THE SOLANI RIVER, ROORKEE, INDIA

IMRAN ALI AND C.K. JAIN

Abstract

Separation and quantification was achieved with a five component mixture of metal ions by EDTA (2%) impregnated silica gel layers and compared with the results obtained with atomic absorption spectrometer. The mobile phase used was phosphate buffer (p11 8.0, 2.0 M) with tetra ethyl ammonium bromide (1%) as counter ion. 1-Naphthol (0.1% in methanol) was used as metal ions locating agent. The percentage recovery of these metal ions on impregnated TLC ranged between 80 to 96. The developed system was used to separate and identify the metal ions present in the Solani river, India.
