BEHAVIOURAL DIFFERENCE OF TOBACCO AND EGG PLANT TO SAME LEVELS OF CHLORINE POLLUTIONN. PANDVA AND S.J. BEDIAbstract Present investigation deals with the effect of a local pollutant, Chlorine, on two different plant species. Nicotiana tabacum Linn. (Tobacco) var. A-119 and Solanum rnelongena Linn. (Egg Plant) var. S-16 round. The plants were grown in pots near an alkali..and chemical industry where the major air pollutant is chlorine, as well as at a reference away from the industry. Both the species exhibited differential response to chlorine pollution which was reflected in various investigated parameters (total leaf area, biomass, chlorophyll content, total soluble sugar content, Chloride content and yield). While egg plant showed negative response and very high sensitivity to chlorine pollution, tobacco showed positive response with better growth and yield than reference, under same conditions. Scavenging capacity of both the species is discussed.
