EFFECT OF MERCURY POISONING ON SOME HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS FROM A FRESH WATER FISH, CHANNA GACHUA

S.S. PATIL AND P.V. JABDE

Abstract

The different haemaological tests were carried out on a fresh water fish, Channa gachua, from the Mosam river (1 Km away) flowing through Malegaontown. The fish (8.0 1 cm length, 10.0 ± 1 gm. wet weight) were exposed to different concentrations of mercury. The haematological tests like, total count of erythrocytes and leucocytes (Brown, 1976), haemoglobin concentration (Dacie and Lewis, 1968), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH) and differential count of leucocytes were carried out on the fish exposed to 1.06 ppm of He (LC50 value for 96 hr acute toxicity) at gradual decrease in the total count of erythrocytes, as well as haemoglobin concentration (anaemia) was observed. Total leucocyte count showed gradual increase in numbers with peak value at 48 hr. Due to intoxication, lymphocytosis in lymphocytes and neutropaenia in neutrophils were observed from the differential count. Eosinophils and monocytes showed fluctuating results. Cytological study revealed that cellular disorders are possible in blood corpuscles.
