Abstract

The effect of carbaryl (sevin) on testicular morphology and some biochemical estimations in blood serum and testis (gonadotropins, testosterone, testicular alkaline and acid phosphatases, and total lipid levels) were quantified in the mice Allis musculus. Animals were exposed with carbaryl (375 ppm) via drinking water for the period of 15, 30, 45 and 60 days resulting in reproducible, sequential pattern of seminiferous tubules and insterstitial cells degeneration. Initial changes involved slight involutary, degenerative and pycknotic changes, while in later stage more severe changes in spermatogenic and interstitial cells were noticed followed by disorganised lamina propria, interstitium became haemorrhagic and oedamatus in condition. Apart from this. it is also noticed that carbaryl altered the testosterone and gonadotropin levels in blood serum, testicular total lipid, alkaline and acid phosphatase activity in different duration of the experiment. All these results suggest that carbaryl inhibits the function of testis in M. museulus by effecting directly on the organs or through hypothalamohypophyseal gonadal axis.
