AMBIENT AIR QUALITY AT ROAD SIDE OF AN URBAN AREA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO RESPIRABLE DUST AND TOTAL SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER

GUNWANT JOSH

Abstract

The relationship between human diesease and exposure to pollution is neither simple nor adequatelN. understood. Respirable dust (PM,„ or SPM of less than 1(1 micron size) is an important air pollutant of concern on account of as ability to reach alveoli of human lungs during respiration. There is little information available regarding the concentration and pattern of diurnal chanue of this important parameter in the ambient air in urban environment. Present paper deals with a preliominary survey of respirable dust concentration at the road side of an urban area at the breathing level during peak traffic hours. Data for total SPM and equated 24 hourly average SPM is also presented and discussed.
