PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF URBAN SOLID WASTES OF HYDERABAD

K.Jeevan Rao, Y.S.S.Vimaladevi and A. Sreenivasa Raju

Abstract

Urban Solid wastes were highly heterogeneous and were in general, poor in decomposable organic matter. The wastes were alkaline in nature and the organic carbon content and the content of major and secondary nutrients varied widely. The content of soluble salts was high and variable. The USW contain significant quantities of pollutant elements like Pb, Ni, Co, Cr and Cd which may pose some problem in the long run. USW contained heavy metals more than in normal agricultural soils. The positive aspects of USW do not obviate the fact that USW at high doses produces undesirable effects either due to an increase in the amount of certain elements to toxic levels and soluble salt con-tent in the long run.
